Malaika Henriques

Malaika is an associate at Derstine Partners. Malaika initially joined the firm as a temporary first-year associate and eagerly joined the team in a full-time capacity after being captivated by all the work and the advancements to criminal law Derstine Partners has and continue to contribute to.

Prior to obtaining her law degree at the University of Sheffield, Malaika attended Queen University’s Bader International Study Program in Sussex, United Kingdom where she founded the program’s first social justice program allowing members to critically analyse growing areas of concern in the socio-political world.

Malaika received her LLB from the University of Sheffield with a specialization in Criminology with a comparative focus on multi-jurisdiction functioning of Criminal Law in Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. During her time at the University of Sheffield, Malaika was the School of Law’s International Ambassador and a sitting member of the Criminology Society where she sat as the President during her final year. During her work as the Criminology Society’s President, Malaika facilitated the society’s affiliation with UNLOCKED, a program focusing on shaping the policies surrounding prison reform in the United Kingdom and prisoner rehabilitation.

Malaika returned back to Toronto and finished her accreditation with the Federal of Law Societies of Canada before articling and writing her Bar Exams. She was called in November of 2022. Prior to attending law school and at the inception of her legal career, Malaika has always had a passion for both people and criminal law, believing in being the most zealous advocate possible. Malaika believes that everyone in life has a story and deserves to be heard, especially when dealing with the stressful and challenging period of facing criminal law proceedings.

Malaika is a member of the Canadian Black Lawyers Association and the Black Entertainment and Sports Lawyer Association.
